According to a recent article in the Sun, “Speed bumps could soon be scrapped from Britain’s roads as part of the government’s dramatic plans to curb pollution.”
The move comes after it emerged that the hated humps are actually bad for the environment – as well as stress levels – because they cause higher levels of nitrogen dioxide.
The bothersome bumps have irked drivers across the country for years and have been blamed for ruining suspension on vehicles and slowing down emergency crews.
Councils have now been told the remove the humps as part of the government’s plans to cut pollution levels.
A Costly Move?
But while the mass removal would be welcomed by drivers, it could cost millions of pounds of taxpayer money.
The new report into pollution shows that many of the country’s roads breach the legal limits of hazardous nitrogen dioxide which is caused by diesel engines.
Speaking with the Mail Online, RAC spokesman Simon Williams praised the potential mass-exodus of the hated bumps dubbed the “sleeping policemen.”
He said: “We welcome the news on speed bumps, but we still need traffic calming measures.
