Rule 97 of the Highway Code instructs motorists to have “footwear and clothing which does not prevent you using the controls in the correct manner”.
As flip flops have poor grip, and can move around while you’re while driving, they are not deemed to be suitable.
Wearing the incorrect footwear may obstruct you from carrying out an emergency stop, which can lead to collisions.
Driving without shoes on is also deemed to be dangerous as it can cause your feet to slip off the pedals.
The RAC advises you wear shoes that provide adequate grip.
Driving Standards Agency recommendations echo this: “Suitable shoes are particularly important behind the wheel.
“We would not recommend driving barefoot because you don’t have the same braking force with bare feet as you do with shoes on.”
Drivers are also advised not to wear bulky footwear that restricts ankle movement.
