Owners of driverless cars could be made to sit a new test before hitting the road over fears drivers won’t know how to ‘take back control’ from an autonomous vehicle.
DRIVERS could be made to take another driving test to own driverless cars, a report claims.
The warning has been sparked over safety fears when cars hand back control to drivers.
Drivers were found to take between two and three seconds to regain control of a car when it switched from autonomous to manual mode, at speeds ranging from 20mph to 50mph.
At the faster speed that was enough to travel 45 metres with nobody in control.
And the study said insurers may even set premiums based on how well drivers can regain control – with older drivers who may have slower reactions charged more.
